A horse was rescued from a canal on Sunday afternoon after fire crews rushed to the scene near Astley.
The animal had reportedly ended up in the water in the Bridgewater Canal, close to Higher Green Lane, shortly before 4pm and needed to be rescued by specialist crews. as lines and a natural ramp were used to help the horse to safety. Emergency services were at the scene for around two hours, it was confirmed.A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: “At 3.45pm this afternoon , two fire engines from Farnworth and Atherton fire stations, the water incident unit from Heywood, and the technical response unit from Leigh, were called to attend Higher Green Lane, Astley amid reports of a horse in the water.
“Crews arrived quickly and used lines and a natural ramp to rescue the animal. Firefighters made the area safe before departing after approximately two hours at the scene.”
