Kate Robinson's horseback riding trip took a terrifying turn when a skip wagon spooked her horse, leading to a fall that resulted in a brain hemorrhage and induced coma. After a long recovery, Kate is fundraising for the North West Air Ambulance, which played a vital role in her rescue.

The morning of March 2 in 2023 began like any other for Kate Robinson. Her only task before her husband Neil's hospital visit the next day was to enjoy a horseback ride with her friend Tracy and Tracy's daughter Kim. As they returned to the stables, their group of riders trotted across a bridge spanning the M6 motorway in North Lancashire. Suddenly, a skip wagon approached from behind, startling Tracy's horse, causing her to be thrown to the ground.

As Kate attempted to dismount her mare, Emmie, she too was thrown off. The next memory Kate has is waking up two days later in the neurological ward of Royal Preston Hospital, realizing she had been placed in an induced coma after suffering a brain hemorrhage. 'I felt as though I had woken up in some parallel universe,' said Kate, 63. 'As far as I was concerned, I’d dismounted from Emmie to help her and we’d completed the ride and gone home. My head told me that following the ride out, I went home and walked the dog.' After Kate was thrown from her horse, the North West Air Ambulance was dispatched to the scene. Both horses, Emmie and Hedeira, bolted away, although Kate later learned that armed police had attempted to locate the escaped horses, fearing they might end up on the M6. Local residents, however, played a crucial role in guiding the horses back to the stables. 'There is no doubt that if the armed police had caught up with them, those two mares would have been shot. Kim and her family not only assisted in saving my life that day, but they also prevented my horse from losing hers as well,' said Kate, who works at Lancaster Girls Grammar School. In the nearly two years since her accident, Kate, who lives near Carnforth, has undergone extensive rehabilitation. Last August, she took her first ride back on Emmie. 'I really felt as though I had been separated, detached, living on the outside and looking in, removed and disassociated from reality. This feeling stayed with me for probably a year afterwards,' she added. Kate is now raising money for the air ambulance and aims to collect £4,500, the average cost of a callout. She is hosting a gala dinner at Burnley FC's Turf Moor stadium on March 22 to contribute to the £1,285 she has already raised through her JustGiving page. 'There is a reason why I have been given a second chance, as I have said it's about having to utilize what I have learned, using it well. One thing I must do is to repay the charity – something I feel very strongly about. I’m considering it a journey without sounding cliche – something that needs to be completed.'
