Horsebox driver stranded after trying to cross causeway at high tide due to 'language problems'
The man was trying to cross the lengthy causeway on Holy Island, a tidal island off the northeast coast of England, in Northumberland, where the tide sweeps in from the North Sea twice daily, covering the road linking to the mainland. The Press Association said that the lifeboat crew was relieved when they found that the swamped horsebox was empty in the rising tide.
The Seahouses RNLI inshore lifeboat was called to the incident on Saturday afternoon and found the sole occupant had managed to find his way to a refuge box, which are built for this eventuality on the causeway.Operations manager Ian Clayton said there were initially reports that two men had been in the vehicle and language difficulties meant it took some time to verify that just one person was involved."That would have been quite a difficult situation.
The lifeboat had been on a training exercise at the nearby Farne Islands when they responded to the report just after 3pm yesterday, during a high spring tide. What was Chartism? The man was rescued from the refuge box and landed safely on the mainland side, where he was handed into the care of local coastguard officers. Safe crossing times for March 23 were from 8.20am to 1.50pm and it was unsafe to cross again until 8.50pm.The BBC reports that Northumberland county council put up warning signs at either end of the mile-long causeway, to try and slash the number of strandings.
