This article highlights the crucial role hospital cleaners play in ensuring patient safety and well-being. Cleaning staff at Nottingham City Hospital and the Queen's Medical Centre share their experiences, emphasizing the importance of their work and the challenges they face.
Being a hospital cleaner involves more than just mopping up vomit and changing dirty bed sheets - it's what keeps the place running. That's according to members of the nearly 1,000-strong army that work across Nottingham City Hospital and the Queen's Medical Centre.
“If we don’t clean properly it will impact the patient experience and the patient themselves," said the 61-year-old. “I’ve seen from a professional point of view how important cleaning is but also from a patient and relative’s point of view. “It’s a heavy workload. It could be a 28-bed ward and they’re cleaning all the beds," said Ms Tozer. “You have to adapt yourself to be able to go into and clean these areas. It takes a strong person sometimes to deal with critical machines and the ‘beep beep beeps’.
“We have a multinational and multicultural workforce. There are a lot of colleagues who come from Europe, African countries, India and Thailand." Jennifer O’Neil, who has worked as a cleaner at the hospital for 23 years, compared the team to a family. "There’s a good support network," said the 55-year-old.
