'We are currently experiencing exceptionally long waits in our A&E department'
A hospital has issued an urgent plea to the public as its A&E faces 'exceptionally long waits'. The Royal Albert Edward Infirmary's emergency department in Wigan has said it is only for 'serious and life-threatening conditions'.
"We are currently experiencing exceptionally long waits in our A&E department and urge you to access it appropriately," Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust tweeted this morning at around 11am. "Use NHS 111 online or by phone to determine the most appropriate place for your health needs. Help us help you – please share!"The warning comes as the NHS is feeling intense pressure across hospitals, emergency services and GPs alike.
Earlier this week, on Monday night, The North West Ambulance Service issued an urgent plea, asking members of the public to only call the emergency line if absolutely necessary. Bosses also apologised for delays, as they said the service was extremely stretched across the region. Next week, unions representing ambulance workers, paramedics and call handlers announced huge walkouts for the first time in history over long running pay disputes.
