Hospitals have been told to free up beds as they brace for next wave of industrial action this time from ambulance staff.Hospitals are being asked to free up as many beds as possible in preparation forSir David Sloman, NHS England’s chief operating officer, has warned it will be “a very challenging period” with “extensive disruption” as the NHS is hit by a succession of walkouts.

However, discharging patients from hospitals to clear beds was a manoeuvre described as “really difficult to achieve” by the Royal College of Emergency Medicine’s president.programme: “We always want it to be able to allow ambulances to return back to the frontline as quickly as possible.“To give you an idea of how big the problem is, in the last week, three-quarters of emergency departments are holding ambulances with handover delays every day.

She added: “We understand why ambulance staff have voted for industrial action but it’s vital that the Government and unions talk urgently to find a way to prevent this and further strikes from happening.” They said this could involve “the creation of observation areas and additional beds elsewhere in the hospital.”
