Keep on loving you.
That’s the simple message shared between fans and bands Monday, July 15, at Train and REO Speedwagon’s co-headlining performance before nearly 11,000 strong at a hot, humid and sticky Blossom Music Center.
Appearing as a young 72-year-old, the spry frontman -- sans mullet -- was in great voice performing arena rock classics to an accepting audience.“It’s a Monday night and this place is rocking. It’s going to be Saturday night here tonight.” Next up was Train, which -- more than a quarter of a century after the pop band with hints of alternative and roots sounds arrived on the scene -- provided the sweaty audience with a 90-minute fun set filled with mostly one hit platinum song after another.
Whether it’s a deadpan reaction when dropping jokes or goofing with bandmates -- including keyboardist-guitarist Jerry Becker -- the singer is having fun with the group following his lead. The most tender part of the evening came during “Marry Me” when a solo-acoustic Pat Monahan performed the heart-shaped song while a couple in the crowd actually got engaged.
With his dad playing the role of John Bonham on the drums, the 12-year-old -- appearing to be on the path to one day take over the family business -- delivered a surprisingly soulful performance.Speaking of family dynamics, Monahan hit on a familiar theme shared among audience members when walking through the security pit and joking an audience member didn’t know any of the songs. For Alliance’s Simeone family, the couple -- with son in tow -- sort of embodied the thought.
