Transport chiefs are planning to increase the number of return services between Belfast and Dublin, with hopes of running hourly train services starting from September. The increased service is made possible by a €12.5m investment from the Shared Island Fund and an additional €165 million funding boost from the PEACEPLUS Programme.
Hourly train services between Belfast and Dublin could be running as soon as September, we can reveal.
Transport chiefs are hoping to deliver the increased service by almost doubling the number of return services between the two cities. The Enterprise currently makes eight return journeys a day, but according to a source within Ireland's Department for Transport there are plans to increase this to 15 “from September”.It follows a €12.5m investment from the Shared Island Fund to help deliver improvements set out in the All Island Rail Review.
But an additional €165 million funding boost from the PEACEPLUS Programme will also help procure eight new modern and sustainable train sets to replace the existing four.Belfast Live has been told: “There are plans to increase the frequency from eight daily returns to 15 later this year - from September - using four enterprise train sets and two non Enterprise sets.“That will happen when the eight train sets are brought into service in 2029.
