The Ethics Committee’s actions on Cuellar will be scrutinized and could determine whether there is a push to oust him before the criminal case is resolved.

U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Laredo, walks to the House chamber to vote on Capitol Hill, Wednesday, May 15, 2024, in Washington. Federal authorities have accused Cuellar and his wife, Imelda Cuellar, of accepting money from 2014 to 2021 in exchange for the congressman advancing the interests of a former Soviet republic and a Mexican bank. He says they are innocent.WASHINGTON — The House Ethics Committee announced Wednesday it has opened an investigation into corruption allegations against U.S.

Cuellar and his wife, Imelda Cuellar, were accused of participating in schemes involving bribery, illegal foreign influence and money laundering in a federal indictment announced in early May.The charges allege Cuellar accepted almost $600,000 in bribes to advance the interests of a bank in Mexico and the former Soviet republic of Azerbaijan.

U.S. Rep. Michael Guest, R-Miss., will serve as the subcommittee chair and U.S. Rep. Glenn Ivey of Maryland as its top Democrat.“The Committee is aware of the risks associated with dual investigations and is in communication with the Department of Justice to mitigate the potential risks while still meeting the Committee’s obligations to safeguard the integrity of the House,” according to the release.

After U.S. Rep. George Santos, R-N.Y., was indicted on federal charges, an initial effort to expel him failed when members from both parties said he deserved due process.Cuellar, who has bucked his party on issues including abortion and border security, has survived many challenges during his nearly two decades in office.

This year’s race was not expected to be a top-tier contest, but the criminal charges could change the calculus on whether national Republicans see it as worth significant investment., Washington correspondent.
