The Big Picture Despite being the largest castle in all of Westeros, Harrenhal is an accursed stronghold, rumored to be haunted by scores of ghosts long since passed. There's merit to this perceived curse — the enormous Riverlands castle has an extensive record of its former keepers meeting their demise during their tenure as protectors of the fortress, creating an infamous history of houses brought to extinction within its walls.
Early Strongs There were a few noteworthy Strongs before those of the time of Viserys I's reign. Osmund Strong was appointed Hand of the King during Aegon the Conqueror's reign, and even helped oversee the construction of the wall built around King's Landing. Lucamore Strong was appointed to the Kingsguard by Jaehaerys Targaryen . However, he broke his vows and fathered 16 children, consequently leading to his castration and banishment to serve on the Night's Watch at the Wall.
Harwin Strong Known as "Breakbones" for his formidable might, Ser Harwin Strong is a knight and a member of the City Watch of King's Landing, eventually rising ranks to become Commander of the gold cloaks. As Lyonel's firstborn son, he was also the heir to Harrenhal, though he doesn't have a large presence in the first half of Season 1. Instead makes subtle yet consistent appearances in the series, building up his recurring importance in Rhaenyra's life.
Even after his death, Harwin's actions echo in the years and wars to follow. The legitimacy of Jacaerys and Lucerys' birth is one of the driving counterarguments against Rhaenyra's claims to the throne, as the Greens leverage the illegitimacy of their births to discredit her place as queen. But though he was never able to claim his children publicly, there are positive remnants of Ser Harwin's fatherhood that are evident in his sons.
