Energy bills, water bills, council tax, and other living costs are expected to increase in the upcoming year, prompting calls for billpayers to find ways to minimize expenses.

Household bills are set to rise in the upcoming year, starting from New Year's Day. Energy bills, water bills, council tax and other costs of living are all expected to increase, prompting calls for billpayers to look for ways to minimise their expenses. From January 1, Ofgem's energy price cap will increase by 1.2 percent for the first quarter, meaning the average household with a dual fuel direct debit will see an annual rise of £21, bringing their yearly bill up to £1,738.

The cap is reviewed every three months, with the next announcement for April through June due by February 25. Andy Kerr, founder of energy experts BOXT, advises: 'Consumers should remember that the Ofgem price cap does not set the maximum a household will pay on their energy bills and need to remain vigilant about their usage to avoid receiving an unexpectedly costly bill.' Fixed rate tariff users won't be impacted, as their unit rates are constant. BOXT recommends looking at ways to improve your home energy efficiency, such as bleeding radiators and getting insulation put in, to cut costs. Another uptick in several bills arrives in April, just before the new tax year commences on April 6. Water bills are predicted to soar by around 20 percent from April, adding an average of £86 to annual bills, although this will differ across regions. From April 1, council tax is set to take a leap, with many local authorities opting for the maximum increase of 4.99 percent. Some cash-strapped authorities are bringing in even higher increases, with Birmingham City Council approving a 10 percent rate hike. TV licence fees are also going up, with the cost for a standard colour licence rising by £5—up from £169.50 to £174.50. Holders of a black and white licence will see their fee bump up to £58.50, up from the current £57. On a more hopeful note, energy experts at Cornwall Insight anticipate a 1.4 percent dip in the energy price cap from April, potentially easing average yearly bills down to £1,71

Labour's 'Grocery Tax' Could Hike UK Household Bills by £56, New Analysis FindsLabour's 'Grocery Tax' Could Hike UK Household Bills by £56, New Analysis FindsA new analysis suggests that Labour's contested 'grocery tax', formally known as Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), could add up to £56 annually to UK households' shopping bills. The policy, aimed at meeting net-zero targets by requiring retailers and manufacturers to cover packaging waste collection and disposal costs, is facing backlash for potentially raising food prices and burdening businesses with additional bureaucracy. While the Government argues EPR will incentivize environmentally friendly practices, opponents fear these extra costs will ultimately be passed onto consumers.
