Bird strikes are a common hazard in aviation, especially during take-off and landing

Rescue workers take part in a salvage operation at the site of where an aircraft crashed after it went off the runway at Muan International Airport, in Muan, South Korea. The incident has claimed the lives of at least 177 people, in what is the country’s deadliest aviation disaster. Of the 177, the youngest victim was revealed to be a three-year-old boy.

Lee Jeong-hyeon, the chief of Muan fire station, stated in a televised briefing that investigators are exploring several possible causes for the crash, including the possibility of a bird strike. While low, Minuan International Airport has recorded the highest number of bird strikes of all South Korea’s 14 regional airports with 10 incidents occurring between 2019 and August this year, according to data submitted to parliament by the Korea Airports Corporation.

The most well-known case is the “Miracle on the Hudson,” when a US Airways flight lost power in both engines after striking a flock of geese, forcing the pilots to ditch the plane in the Hudson River in 2009. Authorities worldwide have implemented measures to mitigate bird strikes, including radar systems and habitat management near airports. As investigators continue to examine whether a bird strike contributed to the catastrophic Jeju Air crash in South Korea, three other recent airline incidents have raised further concerns about aviation safety. In Norway, a KLM Boeing 737-800 veered off the runway at Oslo Torp Sandefjord Airport after experiencing a hydraulics issue.
