An underwater forensics expert has revealed how his team will deploy a high-frequency sonar to hunt for missing Nicola Bulley and insisted “if she is in the river, we will find her”
their powerful sonar equipment is the best in the world and has a higher frequency than those used by the police. It is trawled behind search vessels to give “crystal clear” images of objects as small as sticks in the murkiest water.next to the river in St Michael’s on Wyre on 27 January, sparking a huge police and multi-agency search.
“We tow what is called a towfish, which is like a missile, behind the boat. It sends a soundwave across the riverbed, and then it bounces off any objects and brings a return into the computer on board that I’ll be looking at. Mr Faulding has also trained the London Fire Brigade specialist rescue teams and the United Kingdom’s Search & Rescue Teams , as well as worked on the mystery death of MI6 spy Gareth Williams.
“We can scan up to 60 metres wide. This is quite a narrow river. When we go down the middle of the river we can scan to each bank. “If the river was flooded the body could get carried away very quickly. But this river is reasonably benign, I think, so I would not have expected her to go too far.”
