. Not that this represented much of an upheaval, Alessandro reflects, especially from the global perspective that his new role gives him. Today he is speaking to me from Dubai, where Zegna is holding an event for its brand ambassadors. He spends a quarter of his time travelling to cities that have a large Zegna customer base – Berlin, Tokyo, Singapore, Los Angeles, Beijing – so Europe doesn’t feel that big. ‘So it never felt like I’d moved abroad,’ he laughs.
Alessandro’s appointment in 2016 marked a return home professionally too. His first job on graduating from the Marangoni fashion school in Milan was with Zegna, and in 2003 he became creative director of Z Zegna, its new men’s fashion line where he introduced a more youthful edge to the heritage brand. Now Z Zegna is just one of three Zegna labels he oversees, alongside the made-to-measure tailoring line Su Misura and Ermenegildo Zegna Couture XXX .
The impact of Zegna’s environmental sensitivity extends from production to the inspiration behind his designs for the brands: the theme of his Z Zegna spring 2020 collection is desertification, the process by which formerly fertile parts of the world become arid wastelands thanks to deforestation and climate change. This is reflected in verdant colours contrasting with mineral tones and textures, and in the fabrics themselves: lightweight and protective for hotter, harsher landscapes.
