Recreational fishing is among the most popular pastimes for Victorians, whether it is sitting at the edge of a pier, launching a boat or casting a line from a riverbank.
Fishcare Victoria promotes responsible fishing and care for the marine environment. The group’s Port Phillip and Western port facilitator, Ian Whiteside, is a keen angler who says fishing is an activity that can be done for relatively low cost. He says the waters are often calm here, which is good for garfish. There are other species on offer too, including flathead, whiting, Australian salmon and snapper.
