Thousands of anti-racist demonstrators gathered to counter planned anti-migrant protests throughout Britain on Wednesday.

helped to organize many of Wednesday’s counter protests. “Although they are a minority, we recognized that the far-right have got highly paid, well-organized people now, so it was necessary for us to bring all those forces together,” Bennett says.

Rahman, who lives close to Walthamstow, said people were unified in their efforts to make sure “no nonsense” happened in the area and they chanted together as a community. Rahman added that, as someone with Bangladeshi heritage, he was inspired byagainst Bangladesh’s hiring quota system for government jobs, which saw at least 300 people killed and ended the autocratic rule of 76-year-old.

One resident who joined the Brighton counterprotest said she felt terrified about scenes she had seen in the past week and wanted to do something about it. “I’m able bodied and white, and I have all this privilege so I might as well use it for those who can’t,” says Maddie Cottam-Allan. She hopes that any Muslims, migrants, and people of color who have felt scared this week are reassured that people will fight for their rights.
