Shaheen has 10 wickets so far in the tournament but he knows without the help of the Palace medical staff, including first-team physio Ollie Waite as well as Iqbal, he may not have made it to the Australia for the World Cup.
Speaking on his departure from Palace in early October, Shaheen said: “I want to thank Crystal Palace F.C. for allowing me to use their outstanding facilities and looking after me so well during the rehabilitation programme.” And on Friday, Palace released a video on social media where they asked their players, many of whom befriended Shaheen during his time at the club, who they were backing in Sunday’s final.
Among those questioned was attacking midfielder Eberechi Eze, who said he was rooting for Pakistan before changing his mind to England. Forward John-Kymani Gordon threw his support behind Pakistan, while goalkeeper Jack Butland said: “If we bowl first then England and if not then close.”
