In ‘An Atlas of Es Devlin’, the stage designer maps out her life work creating jaw-dropping sets for Beyoncé and Adele. Devlin takes Vogue through the concept behind the Renaissance tour, getting burgers with Kendrick, and her environmentally conscious changes.
Es Devlin has emerged from a fever dream. Speaking to Vogue over Zoom the week after coming down with Covid, through a three-day haze, she kept seeing visions of large animals. “Ever since I started drawing animals, I started dreaming about them,” she says, her kohl-lined eyes widening a little. “It was almost shocking to admit that as an animal ourselves, we don’t dream about animals regularly.” Devlin plans to paint these visions.
Music, he could see a path out because he had role models of people who came from his background, so you could see a way out that way. Equally though, it wasn’t more difficult, it required a different form of research for me to align my thinking or see through the eyes of Kendrick and Jay Free and Dre, compared to seeing through the eyes of some of the characters in a play I might do with Rupert Goold, in London.
