Entirely helmed by Wang and shot on location by Franquesa-Solano , Expats follows a trio of expatriates in Hong Kong—Margaret , Hilary , and Mercy —whose lives are rocked by experiences of intertwining tragedy and betrayal.
It was just the camera that was having an arc. By having her look out the window longingly and then having her turn straight on with this breath, it gave that button of, “Everything’s going to be okay.” It speaks to how different people cope with grief. One sees an event as a sign of hope, and the other one sees it as really, really devastating. The Line Wang: Once we get into the room, it’s a one-er.
