Wednesday evening's huge anti-racism protest provided hope for this city - but the threat of the far-right will not simply go away
For Merseyside - a region that prides itself on being tolerant, welcoming and diverse - recent events have come as a real shock. Far-right fuelled violence on the streets of Southport, Liverpool city centre and Walton have asked some real questions for the people of this region about the place that they call home and some of the views of those they are living alongside. But on Wednesday evening, in a corner of south Liverpool, those questions were met with an emphatic response.
As the clock moved further past 8pm - the time suggested for the planned attack on the building - it became more clear that no one was coming, or that if any groups planning on causing damage and disorder had arrived, they had been scared off by the sheer volume of people who had come out to oppose them. The mood remained vigilant, but tension was turning into a feeling of confidence.
