In a 2024 update to his 2021 report, state climatologist John Nielsen-Gammon discusses what kind of weather Texas may see in 2036.
If you’ve lived in Texas for any significant amount of time, you know our state is known for its heat. But if you thought it’s been getting even hotter over the past several years, you’d be right. So far, the 2020s has been the hottest decade ever recorded across much of the state. San Antonio ’s average temperature from 2020 to 2023 was 71.5 degrees, an increase of 0.8 degree from the 2010s average.
Climate models suggest that the frequency of 100-degree temperatures is only going to increase from there. Nielsen-Gammon writes that “an overall quadrupling of the number of 100-degree days between the 1970s-1980s and 2036 appears to be a reasonable projection.” As summer extremes continue to get hotter, does that mean winter extremes will get colder? Nielsen-Gammon says this is not the case.
