We've looked at how the Scouse accent has changed over time and what might have caused it
The Scouse accent is one of Liverpool's many distinctive assets. For many of us, it is a proud indication of belonging - letting people know where we're from. The idea of a Scouse accent for many people from outside the city is rooted in prominent 20th century examples like The Beatles and TV dramas like 'Boys from the Blackstuff '.
Partly because it's a self-fulfilling prophecy that we are Scouse and not English -as Liverpool has become much more of a distinctive identity and also a confident distinctive identity since the '80s. 'In 1965, people in the south of England were imitating Scouse accents and they were imitating them because they had status . Then, you get that thing where the Liverpool accent was really stigmatised, particularly in the 1970s.
