Manchester United news as injury issues offer Erik ten Hag early stumbling block for the season after Leny Yoro and Rasmus Hojlund issues
The curse of injuries continues to plague Manchester United, and Erik ten Hag would be forgiven if he had a familiar sinking feeling in his stomach. Not even a 3-2 win over Real Betis can sugarcoat this one.
Yoro was the first of a potential three big additions at centre-back, while Hojlund had seen Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos go out and purchase Joshua Zirkzee to compete for the No.9 spot. Their absences over the coming weeks and months will ask further questions of the transfer demands and plans at Old Trafford.
Just the injury itself will raise queries about how the final four weeks of the transfer window play out, though. United have not been eyeing up another attacker since Zirkzee was signed, yet it wouldn't be shocking if they were spooked into considering their options again. Without making a splash, it would be a brave call for United to rely on him as backup to Zirkzee during Hojlund's absence. Jadon Sancho has also been used up front as Ten Hag looks for creative ways to solve the current dearth of senior strikers.
Zirkzee comes deep to link more than Hojlund, who's electric pace offers a threat in behind more than his Dutch counterpart. With this in mind it leaves the wingers needing more pace to balance the attack. Antony is perhaps the slowest and least direct of the options and may not really be in the thinking for a spot anyway. He was also subbed off with an injury concern against Betis.
