Dr Jamil El-Imad, Senior Research Fellow at Imperial College, Institute of Biomedical Engineering. Read Jamil El-Imad's full executive profile here.

The human brain, an intricate and enigmatic organ, remains one of the greatest frontiers of scientific inquiry. Despite the monumental advances in medical science, our understanding of the brain's inner workings—its signaling language, the language of thought or where memory resides, remain elusive. This lack of knowledge is particularly troubling given the fact that nearly so many diseases are neurological or psychiatric in nature.

As someone who, for over a decade, has been researching epilepsy, it is an uphill struggle trying to obtain research funding, and this is not an exception. In my capacity as the CEO for The Brain Forum, a platform set up in Switzerland to spotlight brain research, I've found that my experience is echoed by many researchers.

When the public is exposed to misleading information such as some of the claims that are being reported in the mainstream media, they may develop misconceptions about the progress of brain research. Additionally, when policymakers and funding bodies are influenced by inaccurate portrayals, they may prioritize less effective approaches over legitimate ones.

It is important to also recognize that brain research is a long-term investment that we as a society must commit to, given that when it comes to human brain research, significant breakthroughs may take time.
