Should the Seahawks break from the NFL trend and play starters more than usual this preseason?
We’re exactly two weeks out from the Seattle Seahawks’ preseason opener against the Los Angeles Chargers. In recent seasons, particularly with the reduction to three exhibition games, we’ve seen most NFL teams adopt the approach of not playing veterans and projected starters even more than one series for the entirety of August. It’s a far cry from the formulaic “starters play a fair chunk of the second and third preseason games” we often saw in years past.
Perhaps the extended “dress rehearsal” will be the scrimmage with Tennessee, not the game itself. The risk with preseason, as ever, is losing key players to injury in meaningless games. In which case, I wouldn’t be shocked if Geno Smith and company have one or two series and that’s a wrap. It may be a different story for rookies like Byron Murphy II and Christian Haynes, who could have extended snaps as the only Day 1-2 picks on the team.
