BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The only constant is change; that’s the reality of a collegiate athletics coach. It’s especially true for a program winning at a high level. For coach Nate Oats, change might be his biggest challenge entering his fifth season at the helm. Player turnover is expected. After winning 31 games and earning the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament, Alabama lost three players to the : , and . Another key contributor, , transferred to Memphis.
In a way, each coach represents a pillar of Oats’ program: talent acquisition, blue-collar mentality and NBA development. But there’s something to be said about the challenge of new assistants learning the system and culture and in turn passing it down to so many new players. And that process is still ongoing. “When you spend so much of your time recruiting,” Oats said.
