Skenes, who will debut for the Pirates on May 11, starred at LSU before going No. 1 in the draft. Before that, he was an Air Force cadet.

Before was a potential ace, he held down another crucial job: “standardization and evaluation” cadet at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. Skenes was only a sophomore, two years removed from high school in Orange County, but he embraced life in the structured confines of a service academy. As a freshman he completed a six-week basic training, majored in chemistry, memorized customs and courtesies and recited elements of military history.

Of course, Skenes did not attend Air Force solely for the baseball, and when he was selected team captain as a sophomore — an exceedingly rare honor at a service academy — it wasn’t because of his moonshot home runs or 100 mph fastball. It was his leadership. The charisma was on display in myriad ways. During basic training, Skenes befriended an exchange student from South Korea who was struggling to grasp English, bringing him into the fold.
