The Chancellor has been under pressure since axing the winter fuel payment for most pensioners
Rachel Reeves with Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner, Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood and Home Secretary Yvette Cooper at the Labour conference , which in practice determines the bills charged by most providers, has risen by £149 for the typical household as of Tuesday.
This would cost the Exchequer £1.5bn and would handily balance out the increased bills which will come as a result of the higher price cap. Reducing these would obviously cut bills – but also leave a major hole in the Government’s budget which could lead to cuts in major environmental projects., who introduced some of the levies when he was last in the same job, would fiercely resist any watering down of the commitments linked to the payments. There is general agreement since the war in Ukraine sent global energy prices soaring that the current price cap regime is not working as intended.
