Robert F. Kennedy Jr, the former independent presidential candidate, became one of Trump’s most outspoken supporters Kennedy Jr has vowed to tackle UPFs in school meals, and said he has Trump’s support to “get the chemicals” out of food products more broadly.
Others are more sceptical about Kennedy Jr’s ability to create positive change, and pointed out that Britain already has much higher food standards than the US. Holden said UK versions of American products are often healthier, having to comply with stricter food regulations and standards. “If it has an impact here it’s only going to be a positive one, because it’s going to make food companies here, who have to follow customers preferences… move further away from ultra-processing to maintain market share.”
“If somebody intervened successfully in the US, if would give a strong signal that you could raise standards here,” he said. The Soil Association expert added that he was sceptical that Kennedy Jr would be able to overcome the food industry lobby. “Factions within Trump’s circle are very in favour of deregulation,” he said.
