So, Sunak needs to address problems on the NHS front line. He must outline a deal that will end the stand-off in weeks. If not, he’ll face the charge that the Government had twelve years to reform the health service – and failed those who need its care. Here and on the economy, his challenge is to show forward momentum.
One unavoidable objection is that Johnson struggled with the weight of the PM role last time and ended up in permanent campaign mode. Inquiries into Partygate and Covid management will soon commence, and neither are likely to burnish his reputation. It is also a lot easier to cheerlead for a “king over the water” than to face the complexities and instability involved in reinstalling one.
