Scherzer underwent surgery on his back in December, and the Rangers have targeted a return sometime around late June.

Texas Rangers pitcher Max Scherzer watches as they play the Houston Astros in Game 6 of the American League Championship Series on Sunday, Oct. 22, in Houston.SURPRISE, Ariz. – The storied history of medicine balls in spring training goes all the way back to some grainy footage of a hefty Babe Ruth getting worked over by a trainer pushing the weighted ball into his substantial tummy. That’s kind of how most players have viewed the medicine ball ever since. Well, until Friday, that is.

Texas Rangers pitcher Max Scherzer tosses a football in the outfield during a spring training workout at the team's training facility on Monday, Feb. 19, 2024, in Surprise, Ariz. How bad has he missed everything from long toss to pitchers’ fielding practice to, yes, even twists and tosses with the medicine ball? So bad, that he had to leave camp. He couldn’t do anything. Having a stir-crazy Scherzer around is not a good idea for anybody.

Now, he can start chasing. The idea, though, is to not actually catch anything fast. Since he underwent the surgery in December, the Rangers have targeted a return sometime around the summer solstice, in late June. Always driven by competition, perhaps Scherzer would like to target something earlier like Memorial Day or Mother’s Day.
