ANALYSIS: The new artificial intelligence application mimics many functions of government, offering opportunities for better and faster decision-making. But it also poses employment, professional and ethical challenges.

A Canberra start-up, Trellis Data, has been deploying its AI platform to several federal agencies to improve decision-making.

Air Services Australia used the platform to more accurately predict if an aircraft coming in to land at an airfield would be required to abort its approach. The Trellis AI model accurately predicted 72 per cent of the go-arounds that occurred, with an accuracy of more than 99 per cent. Working with Services Australia, Trellis used anonymised customer data to train its AI bot on 100 heavy debtors.

The bot was able to predict non-compliance leading to debt up to 14 days into the future, with an accuracy of nearly 80 per cent.Trellis says delivering this solution into production could achieve savings of up to $400 million a year.
