Centrica warned this week UK winter gas storage has reached 'concerningly low levels' although No 10 has said it can meet demand this winterDemand for energy has rocketed as the need to heat homes and businesses has increased.

“We are an outlier from the rest of Europe when it comes to the role of storage in our energy system and we are now seeing the implications of that.” Just after midday on 8 January, Neso temporarily issued the urgent alert “to encourage market actions to increase system margins”, a notice for a great safety net between demand and supply, the first such warning of the winter to date.

“At no point were electricity supplies less than anticipated demand and our engineers were able to rebalance the system without the need to consider emergency measures. The Government could use these measures on manufacturing and commerce to “restrict the use of electricity to specified days of the week”, as Heath did. Alternatively, they could “require consumption to be reduced by a certain percentage”. Energy-intensive industries could also be temporarily shutdown.– this would ration electricity for household consumers.

Pakistan U-Turns on Bank Tax, Citing Lender BacklashPakistan U-Turns on Bank Tax, Citing Lender BacklashPakistan has reversed its plan to impose a new tax on banks' profits from government debt, opting instead for a higher overall income tax. The original plan aimed to encourage lending to the private sector by requiring banks to increase their advances-to-deposit ratio (ADR) to over 50% or face a penalty tax. Banks resisted the measure, leading to legal challenges and deposit fee increases. The government will now raise the income tax on banks to 44% and gradually decrease it over the next few years.
