New survey data found this method was the overwhelming favourite among more than 1000 trial participants when compared to alternatives of supermarket drop-off locations and council depots. Council CEO Tanya Barden said while REDcycle had been valuable, store-return schemes would not be the answer to Australia’s soft plastics problem.
It comes as the Australian packaging industry admits it won’t meet any of the waste-busting targets it set for itself. The targets include shifting to 100 per cent reusable, recyclable or compostable packaging, and ensuring 70 per cent of plastic packaging is being recycled or composted.
