Staying in one can feel like stepping back in time; absolved of cooking and chores, like a kid on holiday.
Remember the blissful oblivion of being a kid on school holidays? You’d spend an entire day gallivanting on spontaneous adventures, untethered by adult chores, mental burdens, or life admin. When the sun disappeared, you’d simply traipse inside to gobble up a thoughtfully prepared meal and collapse on the couch.
The establishment of Kosciuszko National Park in 1967 put a rapid halt on construction in the region, and red tape has stymied more accommodation being built since then. Most ski lodges thus retain the quirks and style of their ’60s origins. Staying in one can feel like stepping back in time – not least because you’re absolved of cooking and chores like a carefree kid on holiday.
Lodges make Australian ski holidays totally unique. While other international snow destinations have modern hotels and apartment-based accommodations, in places like Perisher, the original ski clubs form the bulk of on-snow accommodation. If you want to wake up and click into skis to head out the door, they’re your primary option.
Cooma Hut is a quaint members-only lodge with a communal kitchen, halfway up the slope beside Perisher’s Front Valley. Word is, the diehards pride themselves on trudging all their ski gear, bags, groceries and grog uphill on foot, steadfastly refusing assistance from oversnow transport.Credit:Over the road from Cooma Hut, Dulmison Ski Club began in 1961 and has helped turn three generations of skiers within my own family into ski addicts.
