Long before bolt-in gasser axle kits found favor in the 21st century, you had to build them the old-fashioned way!
When HOT ROD’s gasser front axle tech story was originally published in April of 1967, gassers were a major draw in the hot-rodding world, and Blair’s Speed Shop in Pasadena, California, was at its epicenter, performing a handful of front-axle conversions every week. Incredibly, Blair’s Speed Shop is still in business at the same location at 2771 E. Foothill Blvd and celebrates its 78th anniversary this year.
With this thought in mind, we decided to present this article with a “how-to-do-it” approach, yet at the same time cautioning interested parties on the pitfalls of doing such a changeover without consideration of what they are getting into. What we are saying is, you may be a good welder, but if after the new frame members are welded in place and the springs hung, should the front end be out of alignment, you’re in for trouble.
The photos presented here display some of the talent at Blair’s Speed Shop in Pasadena, California. Under the direction of Mike Hoag, Blair’s chassis shop probably turns out a car a week, most of them Chevys, with a tube axle front end. Suspension ranges all the way from parallel semi-elliptic springs, to single transverse semi-elliptic spring, to torsion bars. One of these kits, the twin-spring arrangement, is shown to illustrate the many components furnished in an installation of this nature.
Stock frame members have been cut off just forward of steering on this Chevy. Box tube members are inserted inside, carefully aligned before any welding.
