Learn about various methods for responsibly disposing of your Christmas tree after the holiday season, including recycling options and charitable donations.

Christmas has been and gone and the decorations are looking a bit tired. Traditionally, the twelfth night is the day to get rid of your decorations and start afresh for the new year, a date that lands on January 6. Although some go for artificial decorations, if you opted for a real tree this year, it's time to safely dispose of it. Luckily, you have plenty of options on getting rid of your tree - but just make sure you're doing the best method, after all it'll be kinder to the planet that way.

It's best to check with your local council what the rules are for where you live. If you don't know what council area you fall under you can use the government's locator tool on its website. Of course, however, you dispose of your tree, you'll need to make sure all your decorations are removed first. And the rules only apply to real Christmas trees - fake ones can be boxed up and used again next year. There are other options for getting rid of your Christmas tree too, and they could be better for your wallet as well as the environment. You could try planting your tree to use again next year if you have a garden and space to grow it. Reach out to a local charity to collect it Several charitable organisations around the UK arrange for Christmas trees to be collected from homes in exchange for a small monetary donation. Once the trees have been collected, they're then recycled. In January 2024 more than 4200 volunteers in 64 locations worked with Just Helping to collect and recycle 65,000 trees and raised £1.18 million for local charities, charities and community projects. To find a local charity that's collecting Christmas trees in England and Wales, take a look at this map here.
