Poking out of ponytails or ruining your otherwise neat updo, split ends are as ubiquitous as they are annoying. Here's how to beat them once and for all.

Split ends. They’re the blight of every blow-dry, the bad side of brushing and the problem with ponytails – those pesky frayed strands that leave your hair looking scruffy and damaged with a halo of unwelcome frizz. We all know how to get rid of them – book a haircut, now – but until you’re safely in the salon chair, here’s how to improve their appearance as much as possible in the meantime, and stop them coming back.

“Split ends are a result of damage, so the main way to reduce them is to reduce damage to the hair,” says, hairdresser to Alicia Vikander and Alexa Chung. “In the salon I see the most split ends from overuse of straightening irons. Don’t brush too aggressively and use a heat protection product. Look for thermal heat protection on the label – some heat protection products only protect against hairdryer heat rather than that of straighteners and curling irons, so make sure you get the right one.

The way you wash your hair has an effect too. Hair is more elastic and more vulnerable to breakage when it’s wet, so being gentle with it is key to maintaining good condition. “If you can, make sure the shower head is directly above you so that the water flows in the direction of hair growth, rather than angled at you from the back. It sounds silly, but it does make a difference – especially with very powerful showers,” Northwood explains. “To save on detangling later you can comb your conditioner through in the shower, too. And when you’re done I’d recommend towel-drying and using a Tangle Teezer brush if you need it.

And Northwood’s final, crucial tip? “If you want to straighten your hair and also to use an oil, please put the oil on after straightening,” he implores. “If you put an iron on your hair after using an oil it will burn just like too-hot oil in a pan. You’ll literally be frying your hair.”Read more:
