As the curiously named Melbourne festival celebrates 70 years, we highlight its best and brightest events and performances in 2024.
As festivals go, it’s something of an anomaly. Yes, there’s music, fireworks, rides and a parade, but Moomba defies definition, going strong since 1955. Mostly, we love it because it’s ours – and there’s nothing quite like it.
For many years, the Princes Bridge was the starting point from which entrants leapt into the air with their flying devices to travel as far as possible, and it was from there the longest Birdman Rally jump took place: 48 metres in 1990. These days the bird-people launch from a six-metre platform on Birrarung Marr.
