Learn how to prevent condensation on your windows with these easy and affordable tips, including a budget-friendly hack using salt. Experts also share advice on sealing windows and the importance of ventilation.

Condensation on windows can cause a myriad of issues in homes, such as mould, dampness, and damage to frames, potentially leading to significant costs and health hazards. However, there are ways to prevent condensation build-up. Helen Godsiff from Eurocell recommends using a dehumidifier in problem areas as it removes humidity from the air, stopping moisture from gathering on window surfaces. For those without a dehumidifier, Godsiff shared a budget-friendly tip: a bag of salt and a bowl.

Salt can draw moisture from the air, preventing it from settling on your windows. The method involves buying regular table salt, placing it in a bowl near the window, and stirring it daily to prevent clumps from the absorbed moisture. This inexpensive technique is highly regarded by experts for its effectiveness. Additionally, sealing windows is crucial to prevent excessive moisture from entering. Check for gaps and cracks around the window frame that could allow cold air or moisture to enter and pick a sealant to fix the issue. Even small gaps could lead to problems, so be sure to inspect the window frame thoroughly. It's also important to inspect and maintain seals regularly, particularly during wetter winter months. Ice can quickly damage the integrity of a seal if water gets inside, but maintaining them helps prevent this issue. They further advised that, counterintuitively, it is also beneficial to open windows regularly for improved ventilation and to manage indoor air quality, thus preventing the accumulation of moisture which might cause damp or mould conditions
