RED WEATHER WARNING: Thousands of vulnerable and elderly people are at risk
The red level warning means there is a significant risk of heat-related injury and death, and whilst many of us are able to take steps to reduce our exposure, thousands of vulnerable and elderly people across the UK are at risk. The ONS data also shows that adults with dementia are more at risk of injury or death during a heatwave. Those diagnosed with dementia were the fourth largest group who died during recorded heatwaves with 7,045 deaths, which equates to 370 deaths from dementia-related heat illness on average every year. Currently, there are over 850,000 people in the UK who are diagnosed with dementia, with many living at home.
Close any windows that they can’t reach, shut their blinds for them, and make sure they have plenty of water within reach of where they like to sit. If their mobility is limited and you’re worried that your prepared cold drinks may get too warm in the heat, make sure you’re popping in a few times throughout the day to ensure they have plenty of cool drinks.
