This article provides tips on how to open a bottle of sparkling wine without making a mess. It also shares advice on choosing the right glass and pouring technique to maximize enjoyment.
As New Year's Eve approaches, many of us are gearing up to ring in the celebrations with a bottle or two of sparkling wine. However, there's nothing more frustrating than uncorking your bottle or pouring your drink, only for it to fizz over and create a mess. Recent findings from Aldi reveal that people in the UK, on average, waste 426,100 litres of sparkling wine annually.
That equates to a staggering 568,134 bottles or over 2,000 bathtubs full of bubbly, all due to a lack of confidence in opening bottles. In a bid to curb this wastage during the upcoming New Year celebrations, Aldi has teamed up with Mistress of Wine, Sam Caporn. Together, they aim to provide straightforward tips for confidently opening a bottle without any fear of fizz. So, here's how you can pour your wine without wasting a single drop, as reported by the Express. Firstly, take off the muzzle and place your hand over the cork to prevent it from shooting out unexpectedly. Next, cradle the bottle in your palm, angling it away from you. Keep the cork steady with one hand while gently twisting the bottle (not the cork) with your other hand until the cork comes out smoothly. For a classy uncorking experience, aim for a soft sigh rather than a loud pop. If the cork proves stubborn, a tea towel can offer additional grip while ensuring control. Forget the traditional flute and coupe - a tulip-shaped glass is the ideal choice for your bubbly. This might come as a surprise to some, but it helps maintain the effervescence while allowing you to fully appreciate the aroma. Pour your bubbly with care, angling the glass and allowing the liquid to cascade gently down the side akin to serving a beer without froth. Should it start to foam, pause for a bit before continuing. And then, it's time to enjoy your drink. If you find yourself with some remaining sparkle, make sure to seal it with a proper stopper to maintain its freshness until the next day
