While the charges were eventually dropped, after the CPS decided a prosecution would not be in the public interest, the matter did not end there; and with Mrs Leedham’s house now on the market, it remains unresolved. ‘We are now living hand-to-mouth,’ said Mrs Bateson, who worked as a factory supervisor for a firm that made windows. ‘That money was to help us with living. You don’t know when you’ll need to get the car fixed or whether you’ll need carers. We don’t have it now – it’s all gone.’While the late Mrs Leedham’s family declined to comment on the row, they continue to maintain that she did nothing wrong – having simply erected the fence for ‘privacy’.
