Viktor Gyokeres' astonishing goal-scoring form for Sporting Lisbon has made him one of Europe's most sought-after players. CoventryLive journalist Andy Turner details Gyokeres' journey from a mid-range forward to a star.
Viktor Gyokeres has been linked with Manchester United since Ruben Amorim's appointment at Old Trafford. The Swedish striker has scored 78 goals for Sporting Lisbon since joining in July 2023. Gyokeres is likely to be one of Europe's most sought-after players this summer. His rise to stardom began during a two-and-a-half-year spell at Coventry City in the Championship. He arrived on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion in January 2021.
CoventryLive's Andy Turner, who has covered the Sky Blues for 27 years, witnessed Gyokeres' transformation from a mid-range forward to a player every club in Europe would want. Turner said, 'It took him time to get going, but everybody could see the raw attributes were there'. He added, 'It wasn't until towards the end of the season that the fans and certainly the coaches as well started to think, 'we might have something here'. After scoring just five times during his initial loan spell, he went on to score 40 goals across two seasons after joining permanently. Turner explained how this dramatic transformation came about: 'He came back stronger, hungrier, fitter and more determined than ever, and he was just so single-minded and focused'
