Mets closer Edwin Díaz nearly blew his fourth consecutive save on Friday
New York Mets pitcher Edwin Díaz notched his first save in over a month with the help of catcher Francisco Alvarez on Friday. catcher Francisco Alvarez made a mound visit after Edwin Díaz recorded the second out of the ninth inning on Friday at Citi Field.
Jeff McNeil had just saved a run with a sliding stop at second base, holding a Padres runner on third with the Mets winning 2-1 and two outs. It was a familiar situation. One Díaz had been in many times recently and struggled to get out of. But Alvarez’s perfectly timed visit, allowed the veteran closer to center himself again, avoiding the outcome most of the 22,850 Mets fans in attendance dreaded most.
