largest employers has warned it will require major cash support after reporting a loss of more than £50 million last year. The papers readied for Nottinghamshire Healthcare's board meeting on Thursday, May 28, explained that despite a recovery plan that had mandated spending cuts, it will need to rely on extra cash support from the Government for the "immediate future" and has already asked for financial help from April to September.before his 2023 killings, said that its "robust" financial management had been thwarted by inflationary costs and higher demand for its services.
Board reports outlined that trust had been unable to fully absorb the additional costs arising from rising demand for private-sector beds, the use of bank staff and overtime, and inflationary increases affecting suppliers and contractors.
"Despite sustained efforts to mitigate these pressures through cost control, strengthened budget management, and productivity improvements, expenditure has continued to outpace available funding," the reports said. "Looking ahead to 2026/2027, there will need to be a stronger focus on delivering recurrent savings at scale, resolving outstanding historic income issues, and ensuring that resources are aligned to sustainable levels of service demand.
" The cash-strapped organisation is attempting to move towards breaking even during 2026/27 and 2027/28, but it has accepted this is "ambitious". Nottinghamshire Healthcare said that to achieve this, it would have to find "recurrent substantive pay efficiencies", but refused to confirm whether this would result in further redundancies amongst its workforce.
"The reason the trust is facing financial challenges is due to several well-recognised pressures facing community and mental health trusts nationally," a spokesperson said. "These include rising demand for our services and also the cost of using independent sector beds when local beds are not available for patients needing our care.
"We are under no illusion about the size of our financial challenge, which is why we are progressing several financial recovery programmes to tackle these issues and create efficiency savings. In the first month of its new financial year, April, Nottinghamshire Healthcare recorded a deficit of £5.9 million, £1.3 million more than planned. This was largely due to a £1.7 million overspend on private beds, reflecting how it was operating above its commissioned patient capacity, the trust's board papers revealed.
