It will be painted by a local artist if it gets the go-ahead
A planning application has been submitted to Nottingham City Council for the painting of a huge new mural on the side of a building in the city centre. Computer-generated imagery shows how the metres-high piece, on the side of the Cubed Cuts & Coffee barber shop on Weekday Cross, will depict a blue-and-yellow robin hood ed in a patchwork cloak.
A statement to go alongside the application reads: "Our mural has been designed by a local artist on the theme of Robin Hood which makes it very suitable for this site and for the city of Nottingham. It has had all necessary permissions from the owners and businesses within the building. They are all very positive about the design."
The local artist in question is Oxygen Thieves, whose tag is seen on the lower left-hand side of the robin's cloak. The group is described online as a Nottingham and Bristol-based collective of like-minded graffiti and street artists, designers and illustraters who "get together and colour things in".
The application form says work has already started, with the first brushstrokes made on September 19. But due to the size and stature of the artwork, it needs the go-ahead from the city council to be completed in full. If granted, the work will provide a splash of colour to Weekday Cross, a main tram and pedestrian route into the city centre from Canal Street on the south side. The application is currently pending consideration.
