Charity Invisible Traffick hopes its new e-learning platform will build on successful work tackling human trafficking in Northern Ireland
Staff at Larne Port have seen a tenfold increase in human trafficking detections in recent years as a result of training they received from a Northern Irish charity.
Following training from the charity in 2019, staff at the port made eight detections of suspected human trafficking and help to disrupt two organised crime gangs. Since then and following further training, it is now making over 90 detections a year as staff become more confident in spotting the signs and symptoms of human trafficking.
It is understood that traffickers have begun to once again use refridgerated lorries to smuggle their vicitms, a practice that had been stopped following the deaths of 39 Vietnamese people in October 2019. Founder and CEO of Invisible Traffick, Gayle Bunting stresses the urgency: “In 2024, it is appalling that we still need to highlight human trafficking and modern-day slavery as an ongoing issue. This is happening here on the Island of Ireland and across the UK, we must take a stand and say: Enough is Enough.”
Attending the event at The Titanic Hotel Belfast is Junior Minister Reilly, she commented; "Human trafficking is a terrible crime that exploits the most vulnerable people in society. Junior Minister Pam Cameron added her support saying: “I commend Invisible Traffick for everything they continue to do to raise awareness of the grave injustices of human trafficking and modern slavery.
