Middlesbrough loan star Sam Greenwood made a huge impact for the side at the home of his boyhood club
Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick is delighted with what he's seen from Leeds United loanee Sam Greenwood so far. The midfielder made his only his second start for Boro in their 4-0 win over Sunderland before the international break, getting on the scoreline against his old club.
"He’s improved a lot since he’s been here in terms of fitness and sharpness. He had a stop-start pre-season so we knew we had to be patient with him. We understood where he was at and now we’re really excited to see what he can bring and what he can achieve, not just for now, but of course moving forward in his career.
It was the former Black Cats academy prospect's first senior appearance at the Stadium of Light, and he marked with a goal that set Boro on their way to a 4-0 victory. Playing against your boyhood club was a new experience for Greenwood, but, in continuing his impressive start at Boro during his loan spell from Leeds United, he handled it very well. It left Carrick delighted, with his pre-match advice no doubt helping.
"Sam certainly didn’t do that. It’s not easy to be in that position, but his focus, professionalism and maturity to deal with that was fantastic. Obviously the goal, but even without the goal his overall performance, he handled the whole day well, and it was a real credit to him."
