Severe storms hit Sydney’s north-west fringe on Sunday but skirted the rest of the city, offering little relief from high humidity.

Severe thunderstorms swept over the Blue Mountains and Sydney’s north-west on Sunday afternoon, bringing a brief cool change to parts of the city, but a blanket of humidity will persist for days.

Sydney sweated through a dank summer’s day on Sunday, with temperatures in the city reaching 30 in the CBD and 32 in Penrith. “It’s basically the easterly winds bringing moisture off the ocean, and it’s been building for a few days, which makes it feel hotter than it actually is,” a Weatherzone spokesman said.

Temperatures at night are expected to remain high until Wednesday. The forecast for later in the week is still temperatures of about 31 degrees on Friday, but it should feel cooler as the easterly winds ease.
